Star Studded
I have been intrigued with the combination of unlike media for a given work—in this case, the inherent hardness/roughness of mosaic stone and the softness/smoothness of encaustic (natural beeswax) in a “bed" of Mexican amate bark paper. Both stone and wax are ancient artistic media, but neither is more ancient than the flat species of sea urchin, Clypeasteroida, with its characteristic star. I wanted to play off this star theme for this work, using the Venetian millefiori glass to tie both sides of the composition together.
