Barusco
Barusco is one in a series of Mosaic Portraits that are translations of original collages created by my artist friend, Helen M. Salzberg, who uses colorful paints and printed papers in her art. By enlarging her designs, cutting uniquely shaped substrates, and using a combination of stained glass, vitreous tiles, and custom fused glass tiles, the Mosaic Portraits become vibrant and intriguing. Custom fused glass tiles have a life of their own. The many layers of hard, cold glass melt into each other, change color, become one, and are reborn as new glass tiles, ready for mosaics. By fusing glass, one-of-a-kind additions to my mosaic projects appear and encourage spontaneous freedom, adjusting my artistic vision every time the kiln is opened. What emerges from the intense heat is always joyful, and revealed as a new, fascinating, shimmering glass object that reflects light and is intended to catch the viewer’s eye from every direction. Barusco inspired me to loosen up and be free with colors and shapes as they encountered each other. The mosaic process is slow and occurs over several weeks. Patiently creating the fused glass, waiting for it to fire, then seeing how and where it can be used when it has cooled, always leads my creativity into a new direction.
